Music, Dance & Drama

Music
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College has an active music program. Music forms an important element of the Bath Street Campus curriculum. Experiences are planned to encourage students to create, listen, sing, dance and share music. Musical performances form some of the major events in the College calendar. In Term 3 classes perform a musical item at the annual Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College Concert.



 


At the Sadadeen Campus students begin an instrumental program in Year 9 and may follow it through to Year 12. As well as playing in the classroom, beginning students join the Cross Campus Band. As they work and reach a higher standard they may be asked to join the OLSH Senior Band or one of the smaller ensemble groups. Opportunities also exist for students to participate in various vocal groups. Students are also encouraged to form groups of their own.

 

OLSH perform at a number of events and celebrations including the local Centralian Eisteddfod and Alice Springs Festival. Other events include the OLSH College Concert, OLSH Fete, Presentation Evening, and campus events. OLSH also participates in the Generations in Jazz festival in Mount Gambier, South Australia.

 

At OLSH students not only receive the theoretical and aural training required to achieve well academically, they spend a lot of time enjoying music by playing their instruments individually and in a group.

 

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College offers a private lesson program. Students can study a variety of instruments. Lesson teachers work on a contract basis for the College and must all meet the standards and expectations of OLSH before they begin teaching. Lesson rates vary according to the individual teacher and parents are advised of these by letter before lessons begin. Tuition may change depending on availability of teachers. Lesson times are often limited due to high demand and students are placed on a waiting list in accordance to when they registered. Dance
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College has a dynamic Dance program. Students may study Dance as an elective from Year 9 to Year 12. In the Dance course students will study Dance Performance, Dance Technique Dance Composition and Dance Perspectives. At OLSH students major in Contemporary dance and minor in jazz/hip hop.

 

Dance students at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College have the opportunity to perform in various community and school based events. Students perform annually in the Centralian Eisteddfod, with the Year 12 Dance Students placing first in the Open Aged Contemporary/Jazz section, 2012. Students perform in the annual OLSH College Concert, the OLSH Open Night, Sadadeen Live and College assemblies.

OLSH also seeks to connect with travelling artists, special guest teachers and choreographers to create relevant performances that extend and challenge students’ skills and knowledge of dance. Guest artists may teach in a variety of different styles, including Dance Hall, Hip HOP, Indigenous Dance, Latin Ballroom and Contemporary.

 

 

Drama
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College offers a vibrant and extensive Drama program which caters for a range of dramatic interests. The course allows students to experiment with the diverse areas of theatre, gaining a broad insight into the cohesive relationship between performance and production. This flexible approach gives students the opportunity to develop, adapt and hone the skills relevant to their own personal creative journey.
 
Students acquire the skills and understanding to generate creative and imaginative solutions to the challenge of staging theatrical works. Drama values the exploration of all forms of learning, integrating the creative with the physical and the intellectual. Students analyse texts and other materials, performances, and their own learning. At OLSH students study cultural diversity within the arts; researching and replicating globally recognised drama practitioners and pioneers. As students experience diverse perspectives and challenge their own imaginations, they have the opportunity to develop confidence in their own ideas.
 
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart offers a solid platform for the avid actor, director or designer. Students are given the opportunity to perform at a number of events and celebrations including the local Centralian Eisteddfod and Alice Springs Festival. Other events include the OLSH College Concert, OLSH Fete and Presentation night, and Sadadeen Campus events such as the Sadadeen Arts and Tech Open House and the OLSH Live performance at Witchetty’s and the biannually musical production.
