Blended Learning

At OLSH, our pupil’s digital experience is initiated as early as possible….. in Transition

At Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College, our vision is to prepare each student to leave the College well-grounded in their faith, and ready and able to face in a complex and changing world with the confidence to succeed at the highest level.

The vision that we have developed is focused on the premise that having a personal device allows the learning to become more effectively personalised, available to the student anywhere, anytime and at the pace that works for each individual. This is called blended learning – where, the best of the existing approaches, is blended with the best of what the technology has to offer. We are seeking to maximise engagement with the hope that better engagement leads to deeper learning, more intellectual, conceptual and creative thinking with greater understanding and retention. This in turn will lead to better results, and students who are able to interact extremely positively in the post school environment and make valuable contributions both locally and further afield.

Our pupil’s blended learning experience is enhanced using several multi-media platforms.

The G Suite for Education platform allows students to work collaboratively and safely in an online space; sharing resources and contributing to a shared document. In addition, Google Classroom is not only a great way to share resources with students, but also a place for students to provide evidence of learning. Teachers provide feedback using Google Classroom; ‘just-in-time’ and ‘just-for-me’. Students can also communicate with the teacher asking for clarification or assistance.

Maths Online is used across the campus to supplement the delivery of the Mathematics curriculum and enhance mathematical knowledge and skills. Students view animated lessons that use audio and visuals to enhance the learning. Following the lessons students complete interactive worksheets that provide them with instant feedback. All learning on Maths Online can be personalised to cater for student differing abilities. In addition, the data is then provided to the teacher to use to info teaching.

Newsela is a reading platform used in many subjects at Traeger. This platform engages every learner with thousands of relevant, authentic, real-world texts that feature diverse perspectives and people all students can identify with. Reading instruction is differentiated by choosing up to 5 different levels of the same text. Students also complete tasks to show their knowledge and understanding after each text. Again, this data is available to the teachers to use to differentiate learning within the classroom.

Quizlet is a multi-media program used in Japanese to develop vocab. The flash cards, games and quizzes enhance the retention of key vocabulary.
