Mother Mary's Garden

1st September 2021

Mother Mary's Garden

Towards the end of Term 2, a project proposal regarding establishing Mother Mary’s Garden was presented to the administration. This concept started with the initiative of Year 9 and Year 10 La Valla Game Changers members, together with their mentors Ms Gaces and Ms Perez. The venue was decided on, and with the input of a few staff members, the garden started to emerge. An old statue of Mother Mary was repainted by Game Changers Track members, and with the guidance of Ms Ferguson (Visual Arts Teacher). With Ms Ferguson’s arts talents and passion, the statue of Mother Mary came to life. The garden is located at the entrance to the campus buildings, where students, teachers, and visitors can see as they enter the campus. Native plants are used including succulents, flowering native shrubs, bush grass and creepers/climbers that accentuate the garden. The garden stands out and brings the presence of Mother Mary to everyone.

Maintaining the garden, including watering, weeding, planting new plants, pruning and fertilising are all taken cared by the track members; before and after school, weekends, and when group meetings are conducted. Looking after the garden does not stop here. It is an ongoing project that all La Valla Track members are proud of. They take pride in their ability to work together to maintain a project that reminds us of the virtues of Mother Mary. A blessing of the garden is currently being organised. We would like to acknowledge the enthusiasm and dedication of all La Valla Year 9 and 10 Track members who made this project happen.
